This link clears a lot up; http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/opinions/the-8-worst-parts-of-prometheus-explained-in-the-original-script-jsarg.php

Honestly, if you google "Alien: Engineers" you can actually download the original script in PDF format. It's a surprisingly fast read and it makes a hell of a lot more sense. In my opinion a more satisfying film. You can also google and download "Alien: Paradise" and "leaked Prometheus script" and see how Lindelof changed the entire story premise into the mess we saw on screen. The most surprising (or not) difference between the scripts is the style used to write them. Spaihts writes in a fast paced straight forward manner that delivers, regardless of what Lindelof and Scott claim after the fact, a solid Alien prequel. Lindelof writes in a bombastic and pretentious manner that is over complex and ooozing with "dig me, I'm complicated and edgy".

Download, read, and decide for yourself, I think you'll agree.

Almost you have enough words to capture my anger at this movie... such wasted talent - Idris (The Wire and Luther), Geologist (Harry Brown), Spalle (Pete vs Live, ShadowLine), David, Waylan, Zealot sicenist (Dark Blue), Mr. Chance, Alien Franchise itself..... all undermined by dribble passed on as "writing" and the total crap performance by the "Girl with the Dragon Tatoo", just bathing every line with an overly breathy english accent.

You're "why this....., because that" section was spot on. it is the closest thing yet to really begin to give these writers the hiding they ought to get!

Aside from seeming like a generally self-indulgent geek writer rock star, Lindelof's work pretty much epitomizes the laziness of his generation. Why strive for substance and quality when you can give them meaningless flash and drama? Lindelof lives in the shadows and patronage of great directors and producers and one day they will leave him behind as a bad debt to carry. He's not in the Prometheus sequel because his writing sucks and because JJ Abrams is going to carry him in the next Star Trek picture. My guess is when he fucks that screenplay up we will start seeing a hell of a lot less of Damon Lindelof.

Two things, one in defense of this movie and one that is my main problem with it.

On a purely symbolic level, the script is actually quite coherent. Themes and metaphors all gel very well, it's just that Lindelof can't seem to combine his obsession with subtext with an actual text, so the script turns into an extended dream sequence about the nobility of self sacrifice and the hubris of overreaching. With a more surreal treatment, it might even have worked. After he did such a fine job of outlining a symbolic, mythical journey, the script should have been handed over to what is commonly referred to as a "screenwriter" to bring this journey into focus as a story.

What I think you missed here is how completely and utterly this film fails as science fiction. The central sf conceit is the evolution accelerant, gene splicing, meta virus, black goo. This means that the science we are fictioning here is biology, which in turn means that all non fantastical biology in the story needs to be at least somewhat grounded. You can go free wheeling through impossible land in all sorts of ways, just not with biology. Without verisimilitude in the biology, there can be no verisimilitude for the biological science fiction, and this movie is a near constant face palm experience for anyone who knows anything about that subject.

After watching this, I honestly get the impression that Lindelof is a creationist, which should have disqualified him from a project of this sort, or at least gotten a warning label on it. In addition to hiring a screenwriter to fix his work, they maybe should have run it by one of them "scientist" types.

This is the very definition of 0veranalysed. Braid's storyline plays almost practically no role in actual gameplay 'til the last world where it's only minimally felt.

Braid's storyline is almost exactly like those old video game manuals that try to give a deeper meaning and atmosphere to your on-screen pixels that vaguely resemble a person.

What's sad is majority of the complaints you and most people (myself included) have with this movie is all covered in the original script before Lindelof got hold of it. Even down to the Prometheus deploying satellites to survey the planet, they even explore more of the planet in the original script before actually touching down. Fifield and Milburn's demise after panicking and leaving the group isn't so contrived. I haven't even finished the original script yet but so far it's vastly superior to the actual film. Hell the Engineer's are even seen more as ancient god's that helped humanity with their technology. Even down to saying that it was the Engineer's technology that allowed Weyland-Yutani to "Build Better Worlds" with the atmosphere processor we see in Aliens. It's just stunning that they would cut parts like this out of the script. They created plot holes where there originally were none.

Oh and well done; the article was long but it was damn good. Plinkett would be proud.

Like anonymous before me I stumbled by chance on your blog and enjoy it still. I completely agree on your NMH analysis. The whole "deconstructing" thing in video games is rare and thank god for developers like Suda, who are not afraid to take risks. By the by, if you like analysing games, that are worth analysing, I'd suggest you try "Spec Ops: The Line", if you haven't already. It's a pretty smart commentary on/ deconstruction of the subject of violence and "noble and heroic modern warfare" in video games, where even gameplay plays it's role in the process of delievering it's message. And in the contrast to BioShock with its "shocking" moments, this one truly has some terriying scenes. Just don't be alienated by the first two-three hours, which straight up lie to you about this game's plot and tone on purpose.

I cant completely agree with tom or Nwah... :) I really liked the Bioshock games, to me, they were really fun. Grrr, man its almost embarrassing that another Bioshock fan makes assumptions about somebody and insults them because they don't like a game. Jaded X I really liked you post here, I read it all and it was really entertaining, actually, I agreed with a lot more of your points than I thought I would. Thanks a lot for killing my boredom after a long night of work :)

The problem is with Bioware in general. If gamers were more objective, they would come to the understanding that Bioware is a rather medicore development house made worse by jumping into bed with EA.

The last time Bioware made an outstanding game was back in 2005 with Jade Empire, an eight year old IP they decided to shelve for no apparant reason. Only to give us Mass Effect two years later. And in case someone decides to respond with "Dragon Age", It's not a good game. The story is shallow, more than a few items are flat out broken, namely the % to health items (which were never fixed) and Dragon Age itself is a huge leap backwards where RPG's are concerned.

Mass Effect is a good game, but it's nowhere near what Bioware is truly capable of. Yet gamers, especially the PC crowd, will sing Mass Effect praises and flat out ignore the vast amount of flaws the game has because they would rather have bad western CRPG than nothing at all. If they acknowledge any issue with Mass Effect, it's Microsoft who gets the blame.

Bioware will fall, it's not a question of if, but when. I guess Jade Empire fans should be happy, at least Bioware stopped when they were ahead then ass up one more IP.
